The Real Game

Not long ago my family and I were invited to attend a DeSales University Alumni Celebration, in conjunction with the final Men’s Basketball game of the season.  The Alumni celebration afforded me an opportunity to connect with players I had the privilege of coaching years ago, and I enjoyed catching up with many of them.   But in the main event, although a crowd of 475 encouraged the team right up to the final buzzer, the game ended in a devastating, season-ending loss, 76-67.

Just as the game ended I received a text message from Saints NJ Basketball Coach, Carl Bogan.   You see, while I was enjoying the collegiate game, our missionary-athletes were also on the court at Eastern Correctional Institution, at the southern end of Maryland’s Eastern shore – and they had played two games in the same time frame as the collegiate game I had just watched!

The text message read: We lost both games (60-57) & (62-48), with 336 in attendance and

31 first-time professions of faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!

I had spent the game sitting next to a distinguished gentleman whose son had graduated from the university in 2014, bringing the entire family back for the Alumni festivities.  Right after I received the text message I turned back to my new friend and innocently asked where he was from… and he said, “Maryland”.   I replied, “Wow, I just received a message that our ministry team just lost two basketball games in a prison in your home state of Maryland. But the real game today was our half-time presentation during which one player shared his personal testimony and another player preached the Gospel to over 300 men. 31 men made first-time professions of faith in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior!” The distinguished gentleman’s faced changed immediately, and he said, “What? That is what it is all about! Amen!”

God’s timing is impeccable! God’s Kingdom is at hand and His mission to deliver the lost is the real game. Life becomes overwhelming when we continue to strive for the things that perish, but when God grips our heart with the treasure of being on mission for Him I agree with that Father ……“This is what it is all about, Amen!

Inmate Letters

I pray this letter finds y’all in the best of health physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.  As for me, I am blessed – and I received a beautiful birthday card and the New Creation today!  I want to thank all the Saints who mail out every one of these cards, every year.  Thank you for my card and y’all are appreciated!   The card made my day!

I’ve been incarcerated since I was 19 years old, and I just turned 44 this month.  I’ve learned so much wisdom, understanding, and knowledge from God and His Word, and the Saints like y’all.  Continue to let y’alls light shine everywhere you go,  May God bless y’all and keep y’all always.  He watches over you!

Anthony M., SCI Frackville, Pennsylvania

It is always pleasant to hear from you guys on my birthday.  I receive each one of you to be my birthday gift from heaven!  Since the day I first met you at Belle Glades CI you haven’t given up on me.  This is what God’s loyalty means, which you have demonstrated toward me while I’m in prison – thank you kindly for that!  I’ve just turned 55, praise the Lord, and you are my truest friends in the Lord.  I appreciate al the prayers and encouragement that come in the cards throughout the years and the prisons I have seen you at.  God bless!

Willie M., Jackson CI, Florida

I’m very blessed to have friends like you in my life, friends that are real.  Thank you for thinking of me and remembering my birthday.  That shows that you really did read the little card I filled out that day and you kept it!  I remember you all because you came at a perfect time in my life to encourage me when I was waiting on a response to my appeal.  I was 17 years old when I was locked up and now I’m going on 20 years in prison.  I’m hoping to go home to my mother this year,  she needs me because her health is bad. Thanks for everything you do!

Stephone J., Lawrenceville CC, Virginia

I hope this letter reaches you in good health and God’s blessing.  I’m writing this to my friends at the Saints because I have received my parole and will not be in prison on my birthday this year!  I have appreciated the love and dedication that you have shown for me over these 10 years.  Your cards meant so much to me when I felt forgotten.  I hope to be able to continue to correspond with you when I get home.

Jeffrey F., Newberry CF, Michigan

Thanks for the birthday card.  It means so much to me because I don’t get no mail or nothing from the remaining living relatives I have on the outside – they done left me for dead.  But I still pray for them because I can only do what’s right and let God handle the rest.  Thanks again for your love and care for me.  I ain’t giving up because I know God hears me when I pray.

Allen D., Charlotte CI, Florida

UNTIL THE WHOLE WORLD HEARS!

In 2020, God accomplished a great many things for the Saints Prison Ministry. Although we were shut out of the prisons for most of the year, we were still able to share the gospel with a multitude of inmates before the shutdown.

Sadly, in March, our seasons were put on hold while the world struggled with COVID-19. However, we need your help to be ready to take the Gospel to those living in darkness when the gates open again! Will you join us in our goal for 2021 to answer every invitation we receive?
